Homer~ Eagles and Ocean

Playing on the beach

Playing in the tide pools

This was cool to see, not sure what you call it, wind surfer maybe? But it was 48 degrees. Must be one tough Alaskan out there!

A sea otter welcomed us to our spot here. They are really cute but I wonder if the locals think so. The owner of our campground told us they have wiped out the dungeness crab population here.

The view from our door. Amazing again!

Bald Eagle

Yucky place to get this  photo but this bird was HUGE! I bet he was over 3 feet long.

The boys at the fish cleaning station. If you look behind them you can see the bald eagles that were feeding on the fish scraps. They were only a few feet in front and the eagles didnt seem to mind!

We thought there would be some Spearfish boys interested to see what firewood costs here.

Mark bought each of the boys a new Alaskan knife. Adam is absolutely thrilled as he has been waiting to get his own "swift army knife"

The boys burying themselves in the sand. I love the stocking cap and hoodie with the bare skin. It was cold!

This photo may show the size of the eagles a bit better.
We started out the day yesterday in Soldotna and headed South for Homer. Made a few scenic stops along the way for photos. One stop was in Ninilchik to see them launching the boats with tractors, which was interesting.  Then we headed down toward Homer.  Homer is known as the halibut fishing capitol of the world and the "spit" is the place to be apparently. We decided to camp out right on the spit and  got here at high tide. The boys and Mark have never really been anywhere where the tide changes so for them it was amazing to see. They had a great time checking out the tide pools and playing in the sand. We also took a walk around the boardwalk and saw some of the shops and had ice cream. Black licorice ice cream,  just as yummy as I remember! There are bald eagles everywhere here. We saw them and their nests on the drive down but we have seen tons of them in town. Beautiful but more than that they are absolutley huge. I would say twice the size of a large turkey? I dont really know what to compare them too. We then headed back to the camper where the boys spent the rest of the evening playing in the sand and water. It is cold here, about 40 last night when we went to bed. Today looks better though. The sun is out and hopefully it will get a little bit warmer. Mark made it to the salty dog last night and I am sure we will both make it there today. We havent heard if the Time bandit (a boat made famous by the show "Deadliest Catch" ) is around but I will find out if we can see it as it calls Homer home. They have their own stores here too. Hopefully the boys will get to do some fishing and I may just sit in my lawn chair and soak up the ocean breeze with the sun in my face.
